Dynamic Feedback Costing To Enable Adaptive Control Of Resource Utilization

US Patent:
6487578, Nov 26, 2002
Filed:
Sep 29, 1997
Appl. No.:
08/940388
Inventors:
Kumar Ranganathan - Hillsboro OR
Assignee:
Intel Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 900
US Classification:
709104
Abstract:
An adaptive resource utilization apparatus for an application. The apparatus includes a costing subsystem engine configured to measure resource utilization of application-defined subsystems within that application as well as a feedback mechanism configured to interface the application to the costing engine. The application is enabled to modify its operating parameters based on resource utilization of its individual subsystems as presented to the application by the feedback mechanism.

Extended Trusted Computing Base

US Patent:
7313679, Dec 25, 2007
Filed:
Oct 17, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/688499
Inventors:
Kumar Ranganathan - Portland OR, US
Assignee:
Intel Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 9/00
US Classification:
713 1, 713 2, 713100, 713192, 713194, 726 34, 326 8
Abstract:
A method, apparatus, and system are provided for extending a trusted computing base (TCB). According to one embodiment, a first level trusted computing base (TCB) is generated having hardware components including a trusted platform module (TPM), and an extended TCB is formed by adding a second level software-based TCB to the first level TCB, and properties associated with the first level TCB are transferred to the second level TCB.

Remote Provisioning Of Secure Systems For Mandatory Control

US Patent:
7424610, Sep 9, 2008
Filed:
Dec 23, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/745729
Inventors:
Kumar Ranganathan - Portland OR, US
Assignee:
Intel Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
H04L 9/00
G06F 12/14
US Classification:
713164, 713166, 726 22
Abstract:
A method, apparatus, and system are provided for remotely provisioning an operating system for implementing mandatory access controls on a computer system. According to one embodiment, platform credentials may be associated with a hardware trusted computing base (TCB) of a target computer system, and a mandatory access control (MAC)-based operating system may be remotely provisioned on the target computer system.

Memory Isolation And Virtualization Among Virtual Machines

US Patent:
7640543, Dec 29, 2009
Filed:
Jun 30, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/881847
Inventors:
Mona Vij - Portland OR, US
Carlos V. Rozas - Portland OR, US
Kumar Ranganathan - Portland OR, US
Assignee:
Intel Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 9/455
G06F 21/00
G06F 13/28
US Classification:
718 1, 711 6, 711152
Abstract:
Disclosed is a virtual machine monitor (VMM) that controls access to a page table hierarchy by a guest operating system (OS). For example, the guest operating system may operate as part of a virtual machine. Particularly, the virtual machine monitor obtains control of memory access transactions responsive to the guest operating system attempting to access the page table hierarchy. More particularly, when the guest operating system attempts to access a page table, control of memory access transactions is trapped to the virtual machine monitor.

Thread Performance Analysis By Monitoring Processor Performance Event Registers At Thread Switch

US Patent:
60981695, Aug 1, 2000
Filed:
Dec 23, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/997043
Inventors:
Kumar Ranganathan - Portland OR
Assignee:
Intel Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 1134
US Classification:
712227
Abstract:
A thread switch handler is provided which monitors performance characteristics of a processor executing instructions from two or more threads of an application. The thread switch handler detects when the processor has switched between a first and second thread and is capable of reading the performance registers available in many commercial processors at or about that time. The data that is read from the performance registers at each thread switch represents performance characteristics of the processor on a per-thread basis.
