The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average surged 179.01 points, or 1.7%, to 10,881.20, its highest
close since Jan. 4. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 9.56 points, or 0.7%, to 1373.73.
The technology-laced Nasdaq composite finished essentially flat, up 0.01 of a point at 2838.35. The
Nasdaq, which spent the session on either side of break-even, is up 14.9% for the year. Volume on
the New York Stock Exchange was 1.15 billion shares, compared with 1.04 billion on Monday. The
Toronto Stock Exchange 300 composite index rose 46.14 points, or 0.5%, to 9348.36. The S&P/TSE
60 index closed up 2.85 points, or 0.5%, to 556.77. Volume on the TSE was 185 million shares,
compared with 129.8 million on Monday. The Canadian Venture Exchange index rose 18.16 points, or
0.6%, to 3237.54 (NP D2, Ctz C7, Gaz D4, G&M B18).
