Thermal Protective Compositions

US Patent:
55917917, Jan 7, 1997
Filed:
Jun 27, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/494993
Inventors:
Malkit S. Deogon - Chesterfield MO
Assignee:
Nu-Chem, Inc. - Fenton MO
International Classification:
C08K 302
C09D 518
US Classification:
524 80
Abstract:
A thin-film intumescent composition for protecting a substrate against fire and thermal extremes includes a polymer binder, a solvent, a carbonific, a spumific, a catalyst, and at least some additives chosen from a source of carbon, finely divided elemental boron, a metal stearate adduct with alumina, and a conjugated fatty acid, preferably a conjugated triglyceride. The compositions provide chars having greatly increased efficiency, greater thickness, better physical characteristics including cell structure and physical toughness, and greater resistance to oxidation by fires and by chemicals present in fires.

Method Of Making High-Temperature Glass Fiber And Thermal Protective Structures

US Patent:
60014377, Dec 14, 1999
Filed:
Jul 17, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/895918
Inventors:
Allen W. Thorpe - Olivette MO
Edward W. Taylor - Ballwin MO
Rubin Feldman - Ladue MO
Malkit S. Deogon - Chesterfield MO
Assignee:
Nu-Chem, Inc. - Fenton MO
International Classification:
B32B 1704
B65D 142
C03C 2506
B29C 4514
US Classification:
428 345
Abstract:
A glass fiber capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 1900. degree. F. is produced by treating a glass, preferably E-glass, fiber. The glass fiber is first leached with selected acids, and then the leached fiber is treated with organo-metallic materials of low viscosity, such as a dispersion of low molecular weight water-in-oil emulsion of dimethyl polysiloxane. The fiber is used in such applications as embedding it in a fire-resistant active coating material or embedding it into one surface of a polyolefin or composite plastic, such as a polypropylene sheet. The treated fiberglass can be used as a sole component or in concert with a fire-resistant or fire retardant material to further enhance its fire-resistant properties.
