System, Method And Program For Network User Access

US Patent:
20020065772, May 30, 2002
Filed:
Nov 26, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/995278
Inventors:
Bassam Saliba - Kirkland WA, US
Howard Campbell - Bellevue WA, US
George Webb - Seattle WA, US
Kyle Young - Redmond WA, US
Bert Speelpenning - Kirkland WA, US
Michael Waterston - Seattle WA, US
International Classification:
G06F017/60
US Classification:
705/040000
Abstract:
An electronic financial system for providing financial services over the Internet has multiple billers, a service center, multiple financial institutions. The service center is responsible for distributing electronic bills on behalf of billers. The service center has a Web site that customers can directly access to examine their bills. The financial institutions also offer their own Web sites for their customers. Each financial institution's Web site presents a home page that allows its customers to select different services, such as examining a checking or savings account balance, or conducting a funds transfer. These services are supported locally at the financial institution's Web site. The home page also offers an option to view personal billing statements from the billers, which are stored at the service center. When the customer activates the option to view billing statements, the financial institution's Web server links to the third party's server to access the billing statements without exposing this link to the customer. The customer may actually be handed off to the third party's Web site, or the financial institution's Web server might connect to the service center's server and use an OFX (Open Financial Exchange) protocol, and extensions to this protocol, to retrieve information from the third party's server. The billing statements are branded with the financial institution's name and logo to lead the customer to believe that the financial institution is providing the billing statements rather than the service center.

Distributed Electronic Billing System With Gateway Interfacing Biller And Service Center

US Patent:
63048574, Oct 16, 2001
Filed:
Jun 8, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/093959
Inventors:
David G. Heindel - Woodinville WA
Todd Alan Buiten - Kent WA
Bert Speelpenning - Kirkland WA
Bassam A. Saliba - Kirkland WA
Jeffrey L. Keith - Woodinville WA
Eric G. Jakstadt - Woodinville WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 1700
US Classification:
705 34
Abstract:
An electronic billing system provides a set of tools for a biller to create and design a customized billing statement. The system includes a statement designer that enables the biller to create a template for the billing statement. Once the statement is designed, the biller provides the statement format and billing data to a third party billing service center, which generates the electronic billing statements in the biller-designed format and electronically distributes the billing statements to consumers. To assist the biller in creating statement templates, the biller integration system maintains industry schema tables that are tailored to particular industries. The tables provide a default set of predefined billing categories for a given industry that the biller might wish to use in its template. The biller integration system and service center are each equipped with a gateway to facilitate the exchange of the statement template and billing data. Each gateway has a parcel manager to reliably transfer parcels and track the parcels as they go from computer to computer.

System And Method For Conducting Commerce Over A Distributed Network

US Patent:
61253529, Sep 26, 2000
Filed:
Nov 13, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/748688
Inventors:
D. Chase Franklin - Seattle WA
Darren B. Remington - Issaquah WA
Bassam Saliba - Kirkland WA
Bert Speelpenning - Kirkland WA
Michael Cockrill - Issaquah WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 1760
US Classification:
705 26
Abstract:
A system and method for conducting commerce over a distributed network manage merchant and product information in an electronic shopping basket, payment source information in an electronic wallet, and shipping address information in an electronic address book, all of such information being stored on a consumer computer. A commerce client running on the consumer computer is configured as a MIME handler and extends the functionality of a standard Web browser to support computer-based shopping. A merchant site Web server provides HTML-coded Web documents which describe merchant products and which host computer-based shopping options. The HTML-coded Web documents contain function-calling information by which consumer-selected options invoke shopping-related functions on either the merchant (server) computer or the consumer (client) computer. A consumer selects the options from within the Web browser to initiate shopping-related operations such as: retrieve product information from merchants on the World Wide Web, selectively store product information locally on the consumer computer, locally compare product information from different merchants, locally store payment source and shipping address information and selectively forward such information to merchant sites, order products from Web-based merchants, track the status of purchase orders, and receive instructional information on application usage.
