Fouling Resistant Membranes Formed With Polyacrylonitrile Graft Copolymers

US Patent:
20110198288, Aug 18, 2011
Filed:
Apr 10, 2007
Appl. No.:
12/226121
Inventors:
Anne M. Mayes - Mustang OK, US
Ayse Asatekin Alexiou - Somerville MA, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
B01D 71/42
B01D 71/82
B01D 71/78
US Classification:
210650, 21050043, 21050035, 21050038, 21050028, 21050034, 210490, 21050041, 21050042, 21050036
Abstract:
The present application is generally directed towards polyacrylonitrile— (PAN—) based, amphophilic graft copolymers, for example, for the production of membranes for liquid filtration. In one aspect, the present invention provides systems and methods for preparing high flux, fouling resistant nanofiltration membranes whose pore size can be readily tuned. In some cases, microphase separation of a graft copolymer comprising a backbone comprising polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and hydrophilic side-chains is used. In some cases, nanochannels of tunable width are formed, which may give the membrane permselective properties and/or anti-fouling character. In some cases, a copoylmer may be used as an additive in the immersion precipitation casting of ultrafiltration or microfiltration membranes. In certain instances, the additive can segregate to the membrane exterior and/or pore surfaces, e.g., due to favorable interactions between the hydrophilic side chains and the surrounding environment, which may create a surface that resists fouling, e.g., by biological molecules.

Hydrophobicity Modulating Underwater Chemical Sensor

US Patent:
20130171738, Jul 4, 2013
Filed:
Jun 17, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/704934
Inventors:

Assignee:
MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
G01N 27/06
US Classification:
436150, 422 8202
Abstract:
A chemical sensor that works while being submerged in a highly conductive medium is described. The chemical sensor includes hydrophobic structures that are distributed on conductive electrodes and are separated by small air cavities while submerged in the conductive medium. The hydrophobic structures are arranged such that their hydrophobicity varies in response to exposure to a target analyte. The change in the level of hydrophobicity results in permeation of the conductive liquid on to the conductive electrodes, thereby reducing the resistance levels between the conductive electrodes. The sensor indicates presence of the target analyte in response to detection of a change in resistance between at least two of the conductive electrodes.

Method For Preparing Membrane Selective Layers By Interfacial Free Radical Polymerization

US Patent:
20200222860, Jul 16, 2020
Filed:
Jul 26, 2018
Appl. No.:
16/631338
Inventors:
- Medford MA, US
Ayse Asatekin Alexiou - Arlington MA, US
Hyunmin Yi - Lexington MA, US
International Classification:
B01D 69/12
B01D 67/00
B01D 69/08
B01D 71/44
B01D 69/02
B01D 71/52
B01D 71/76
Abstract:
A method for coating a porous support with a thin membrane selective layer via interfacial free-radical polymerization. The method is carried out by immersing a porous support in a monomer-containing solution, removing the porous support from the solution, covering the porous support with a second solution immiscible with the first solution, the second solution containing a polymerization initiator, activating the initiator to effect polymerization of the monomer, and washing the porous support having the membrane selective layer. Also disclosed are membranes prepared by the method and filtration methods using the membranes.

Fabrication Of Filtration Membranes

US Patent:
20190262781, Aug 29, 2019
Filed:
Oct 20, 2017
Appl. No.:
16/346590
Inventors:
- Medford MA, US
Ayse Asatekin Alexiou - Arlington MA, US
International Classification:
B01D 71/80
B01D 71/32
B01D 71/40
B01D 69/02
B01D 69/12
B01D 67/00
C08F 220/24
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of preparing a filtration membrane. The method includes providing a copolymer solution by dissolving a statistical copolymer in a mixture of a co-solvent and a first organic solvent, coating the copolymer solution onto a porous support layer to form a polymeric layer thereon, coagulating the polymeric layer on top of the support layer to form a thin film composite membrane, and immersing the thin film composite membrane into a water bath to obtain a filtration membrane. Also disclosed are a filtration membrane prepared by the method, and a process of filtering a liquid using the filtration membrane thus prepared.
