Abstract:
A system and method for using path-averaged concentration measurements for estimating the amount of substance being released from a particular location. One or more open-path sensing systems are set up in appropriate locations around possible substance release sites and tuned to detect a particular substance of interest. Path-averaged concentration measurements of the particular substance are collected over time and communicated to an open-path back calculation algorithm. The algorithm calculates time-averaged measurements for a plurality of time periods. Back calculation is then performed with the time-averaged measurements to estimate the release rate and the total release of the substance.

Abstract:
A system for predicting a source location and release rate of a hazardous substance uses the basic knowledge of meteorological information (wind speed, direction, and stability) and two or more concentration measurements of the chemical released. Horizontal dispersion information obtained from surface meteorological data at sensor locations are used to narrow the search domain for the release location, reducing the computational cost. Each of the possible release locations in the search domain and possible release rates are evaluated in a process that predicts a concentration measurement at a sensor, based on a predicted location and release rate. The location and release rate that results in a least error when compared to an actual concentration measurement at the sensor are chosen as the source of the chemical and the release rate from the source.

A system and method for placement of sensors for sensing hazardous substances released from a plurality of hazard points. A processor identifies a location of a hazard point, a fenceline of the plant-site, and a toxic level of concern (LOC) for the hazardous substance. The processor calculates a minimum amount of the hazardous substance (Q) for which a concentration at a centerline of a plume carrying the hazardous substance reaches the toxic LOC at the fenceline, and simulates a release of the hazardous substance in the calculated amount Q from the hazard point. The processor further calculates a pair of sensor locations where the concentration of the plume is equal to the minimum detectable concentration level of sensor based on the simulated release. The pair of sensor locations is then output by the processor.
